The Manitowoc Breakwater Lighthouse, a beacon of maritime history, has stood watch over Wisconsin's Lake Michigan shoreline for over a century. It not only guides vessels safely into the harbor but also represents the rich nautical heritage of Manitowoc, the Maritime Capital of Wisconsin. 2025 marks 130 years of the Manitowoc Breakwater Lighthouse, making this the perfect time to learn a little more about this historic building.
Relocation and Construction
The origins of Manitowoc's lighthouses date back to 1839 when the first lighthouse (above) was established at the corner of York and 5th streets, serving as a guide for ships navigating Lake Michigan. This initial structure was replaced in 1895 by a new lighthouse situated on the north pier to accommodate Manitowoc's growing hub of shipping and shipbuilding. In 1918, the Manitowoc Breakwater Lighthouse was then reconstructed to how it appears today with a cylindrical tower and square-shaped base, elevating its light to 52 ft above water. This lighthouse was originally bright red, until 1939 when it was painted a straw color, and then its present-day white color in 1956.
Multipurpose Design
The lighthouse served many purposes in addition to its primary role as a beacon. The basement was used as a boathouse, the first story functioned as a power room, and the second story was equipped with amenities including a bathroom with a shower, making it a self-sufficient facility for its keepers who were often stuck out there for days at a time during particularly rough storms. In 1971, the lighthouse underwent automation, eliminating the need for a full-time keeper.
Visiting Today
Today, the Manitowoc Breakwater Lighthouse remains one of the city's most iconic landmarks. In fact, the Manitowoc Breakwater Lighthouse was added to the State Register of Historic Places in 1985. Visitors can park in the public lot at Lighthouse Park, which features a dog-friendly beach, public bathrooms, and a pavilion. To see the lighthouse, walk out along the pier, passing along a nature preserve, boats parked in the marina, and the Paws & Play Dog Park. Don't forget your camera, as there's usually wildlife including deer and pelicans along the way. You can walk right up to the Manitowoc Breakwater Lighthouse and even step up the stairs for a better vantage point to see the expansive Lake Michigan and its gorgeous sunrises. Tours inside the Lighthouse are typically available during the day each year on July 4th during Fourth on the Shore.
Open year-round, the Manitowoc Breakwater Lighthouse is a hot spot for tourists and locals alike. Whether you're a maritime enthusiast, a history buff, or simply seeking a lakeside stroll, you'll want to see this beauty up close next time you're in town.
