Indie Bookstores for Your Next TBR

Life is too short to spend time reading boring books — that's where indie book stores come in. Manitowoc is lucky to have three, highly-curated independent book sellers who would be happy to help you find the book that will go straight to the top of your TBR (To Be Read) pile. These women-owned book stores are down to earth and cut out the large retailers to deliver quality stories from author to reader. 

The Nook

A bookstore, mocktail lounge, and event space, The Nook is a hot spot in our community. Patrons can stop in and find their next favorite book, order a mocktail or coffee, and start the first page right there in the inviting atmosphere. Most of their books fit into romance and fantasy genres, with new and trendy titles that you may have seen several times on BookTok. There are some children's books also available for the little readers, who are welcome to explore the kids' room. Frequent public events such as craft nights, book clubs, and poetry readings make it easy to connect with your friends and meet new people with similar interests. If you'd rather host your own event or book club, The Nook rents out its furnished Back Lounge with seating up to 15 people. The first hour is free, and only $25 per hour after that. 

LaDeDa Books

For an eccentric and whimsical experience, check out the fabulous LaDeDa Books.  There's a wide variety of books, including new and popular titles, stories from local Midwest authors, a full children's section, and even "banned" books. In addition to books, LaDeDa is also stocked with journals, greeting cards, games, and novelty gifts. The store is very kid-friendly, so feel-free to bring the whole family!

Black Heart Books

If the names Stephen King and Agatha Christie send a shiver down your back (in a good way), you'll want to check out Black Heart Books. This cozy independent book store specializes in thriller, horror, and dark fiction. Monthly book clubs and a stitch club makes finding your community easy. The ambience and dark design of the shop will put you in the mood for your next scary read, and the comfortable couch encourages you to read the first chapter right there!
