A Cozy Winter Escape to Manitowoc

Hey there, winter wanderlusters! Here’s the perfect itinerary to turn your winter blues into cozy vibes and fun times in Manitowoc. From stunning lakeside views to thrilling winter activities to munching on some of the best cheese curds in Wisconsin (hello, raspberry chipotle sauce!), this is your sign to pack those bags, grab your warmest coat, and make this winter weekend one to remember.

Day One

Start your visit at The Inn on Maritime Bay, where stunning lake views and a cozy atmosphere set the tone for your entire trip. Its location in the heart of downtown Manitowoc makes it easy to walk to most restaurants and attractions without spending too much time in the cold. Scope out their indoor heated swimming pool for later. It’s a great spot to thaw out and relax in the evenings after a day of wintery fun.

Once you’ve checked in, grab a casual bite to eat at The Wharf Manitowoc, where views of the Manitowoc River and Manitowoc Breakwater Lighthouse create the perfect backdrop to enjoy an authentic Wisconsin delicacy, cheese curds! The Wharf raises the game on cheese curds with a tangy raspberry chipotle dipping sauce that you’ll be talking about long after your visit. Stick around after dinner for live music and one of The Wharf’s signature or festive, seasonal cocktails. You could also try their Dome Experience! During the winter months, you can book a chic, heated geodesic dome. These geometric bubbles have clear walls that let you enjoy either street or river views while staying toasty warm. It’s perfect for date night, a holiday get-together, or just a fun night out with friends.

Day Two

Get ready for a day filled with outdoor winter adventures by fueling up on a house-made quiche or breakfast burrito at Harmony Cafe & Juicery. Everything on their menu is fresh, tasty, and comes with a side of goodwill. They support Grow It Forward’s mission of making sure that people in need get dignified access to good food.

Then it’s off to the 76-acre Camp Vits Park, where well-maintained trails make for smooth snowshoeing and hiking. (Snowshoes can be rented from Manitowoc Parks and Recreation). If ice skating is more your thing, head to Burger Boat Company Park to ice skate for free on its riverside rink. Heads up: there are no skate rentals here, so be sure to bring your own! Looking for snow tubing or snowboarding? Silver Creek Park’s rolling terrain has downhill excitement for all ages.

Warm up with a bowl of hot chicken noodle soup or minestrone at Maretti’s Deli. If you’re craving something a little heartier, pair your soup with a classic Italian sub piled high with meats and cheeses. Or you can opt for a fresh and healthy salad, a hot and cheesy pizza, plus tiramisu for dessert. No matter what you choose, Maretti's is committed to using the freshest ingredients, so everything is high-quality and delicious.

Clear your calendar for the afternoon and enjoy the city at a more relaxed pace. If you're planning your visit for December, check out the magical Christmas in the Mansion exhibit at the Rahr-West Art Museum. Or, make your way to the Manitowoc Lincoln Park Zoo for its annual Lights in Lincoln Park, an immersive, family-friendly event full of decked-out holiday lights and animal-themed displays. There are early evening hours, which is great if you’re visiting with kids or have plans for later.

Cap off the night with some winter comfort food at Luigi’s Italian Restaurant. This local family-owned spot has been serving up classic Sicilian dishes for over 30 years. Indulge in a plate of classic pasta with your choice of noodles and sauce, or try one of their specialty creations, like the mouthwatering portobello ravioli, lasagna, or stuffed shells. If you’re craving a slice of pizza, Luigi’s offers plenty of options from traditional to pan and Chicago-style.

Day Three

Round out your ultimate winter weekend at Jenn's Java. It’s a cozy coffee shop with breakfast bagels and sandwiches, wraps, burritos or breakfast bowls. They also have a ton of delish bakery items like bars, breads, and cake pops that you bring home with you.

When you’re done with breakfast, take a deep dive into Manitowoc’s history as a Great Lakes epicenter at the Wisconsin Maritime Museum. (Did you know Manitowoc helped produce 28 WWII submarines for the U.S. Navy?)

Before heading home, make your way to 8th Street and explore the unique boutiques and shops filled with locally-made goods. Pick up a souvenir to remember your winter getaway, or just treat yourself to a little something special.
